Tulipmania
Ever wondered where tulips all began? In a Dutch era known as Tulipmania!
Tulip comes from the Turkish word for 'turbans,' as a tulip in full bloom resembles the highly popularized turban worn tied around one's head. Today, they are one of the most popular flowers and the ultimate display of elegance and love. Many tulips even possess darker centers (like the one pictured above), said to represent a person's heart in love, darkened by passion. However, tulips have remained widely popular since their early beginning. Seeds were first imported in the sixteenth century, and were soon worth a small fortune (sometimes even sold for ten times the annual income of a skilled craftsman)! Tulips became a status symbol, especially the most highly-coveted multi-colored flowers. However, today we now know those beautifully colorful tulips are the result of a tulip disease! Currently, the Dutch own about 70% of the global flower industry, hence, our location in the Netherlands. It is not just the Dutch who admire these beautifully blooming flowers, however. People all over the world recognize their beauty and send them to friends, family, or partners as a sign of their love!
